Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts

Conversion of workshop building Stiftung Oper Berlin

The subject of the invited competition was the conversion and renovation as well as the extension of the existing workshop building of the Berlin Opera Foundation into the main building of the Academy of Dramatic Arts. The Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts trains students within its seven departments in the fields of acting, directing, dramaturgy, puppetry, play & object, choreography and stage dance.

Spatial Landscape

The space program to be realized for the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts comprises a total usable area of 8,000 square meters. In addition to the technical facilities with the teaching and practice rooms as well as the department-specific workrooms, this includes the central area with two studio stages, workshops and fundus rooms, a library, a cafeteria, refectory as well as the administrative area. The aim is to create a design that is both sophisticated in terms of design and function and economical in terms of cost, which does particular justice to the importance of the drama school and optimally develops the existing building from the point of view of sustainability.
