Low Temperature

German National Metrology Institute

The German National Metrology Institute (PTB) in Berlin is planning the construction of a new low-temperature center, the Walther Meißner Building, on the campus of the Technical University of Berlin. This PTB laboratory building will house research, development, and calibration work in the field of thermometry and measurement technology in a temperature range from 0°C to near absolute zero.

Modulation and Modeling

The compact building contains highly sensitive measuring instruments enclosed by a massive protective shell which is reflected in its volume and materials. Beyond its stability and purely rational organization, the building is also expressive, as its underlying laboratory layout grid is reflected in the facade’s modulation and modeling. This creates a design motif that mediates between the whole and its modules in terms of scale. The building’s harmonious and understated appearance allows for successful urban and architectural integration into the campus.
